When the cold winds blow from the Shiverchill it is said that Vaalane’s presence is upon the land. When severe storms ravage a city with destruction everyone knows Vaalane has lost her mind. Sailors and travelers will praise her for fair winds yet quickly curse her capricious nature when the same wind turns foul. Often when one is caught on hard times and things quickly turn for the better they are said to be in Vaalane’s wake.

Vaalane’s champions embrace change regardless whether others may percieve that change for the good or for ill. They view it as great storm much as those that can come from the north. Many relish these challenges and Vaalane looks fondly on those that overcome them, whether by determination, skill, or sheer luck. Vaalane’s will is seldom known regarding most moral issues and she is patient in letting matters play out, though her champions know that her “nuetrality” is not as strict as that of Eoün. She prefers to see her followers succeed, eventually. 

Earning & Losing Piety

You increase your piety with Vaalane when you expand her influence in the world in a concrete way through acts such as these:

  • Offering a treasure to the sea.
  • Convincing others to accept misfortune.
  • Aiding a traveler on a long journey.
  • Face the fury of a storm and win.
  • Overcoming long odds especially by skill or luck.

Your piety with Vaalane decreases if you diminish her influence in the world, contradict her ideals, or let her down through acts such as these:

  • Using magic to calm the sea’s fury.
  • Bowing to the desires or demands of powerful beings.
  • Upholding institutions not devoted to Vaalane.
  • Not offering a gift or token to Vaalane before a long journey.

Devotee

Piety 8+

As a devotee of Vaalane, you are champion of the storm and sea and can call upon her aid in new ways. You may choose 1 of the following abilities that can be used once per day.

Whenever you reach a level that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature, you may replace your chosen ability with a different one.

 

Static Guard

As an bonus action, you cause lightning to pulse around and protect you. The guard has a number of charges equal to 5x your proficiency bonus  + 5, and last for 1 minute or until it is out of charges. While the guard is active its sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius and you have the following benefits:

  • You are immune to lightning damage.
  • You can use your reaction when another creature casts a spell that targets only you. If you do, the guard absorbs the magic of the spell, canceling its effect and consuming a number of charges equal to the spell’s level.
  • At the start of your turn, the guard deals lightning damage equal to your proficiency bonus to each creature within a 5-foot radius (no action required). Each point of damage dealt consumes a charge. 
  • Whenever a creature makes a melee attack against you, they must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be incapacitated for 1 round.

Torrent

As an action, you summon a rising torrent of water at a point on the ground within 30 feet. Each creature in a 5-foot radius centered on that point takes 4d8 force damage. Additionally, each target or loose object, huge or smaller, is thrust into the air a number of feet equal to 10x your proficiency bonus and must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they are stunned until the end of their turn and not stunned on a success. 

Vortex

As an action, you summon winds to swirl in a 15-foot radius sphere at a point within 20 feet. All creatures and loose objects huge or smaller are pulled to a space nearest the center that is not occupied and make a DC 16 Strength saving throw. On a failure, they take force damage equal to 8x your proficiency bonus and are stunned. On a success, they take half damage and are not stunned.

Votary

Piety 16+

As a votary of Vaalane, you are given a access to new and more potent blessings through your Ancient Stone.
